Here at your local dentist serving Maidstone and Chatham, we request that you come in for a consultation before certain treatment plans can be agreed. It isn’t required for everything, but it is an important requirement for some treatment types.
Many of our popular treatments are in demand, and lots of patients want to come in and get treatment started right away, so we want to let you know why the consultation with us is so important. It actually forms the very first step in your treatment plan with us, and has lots of benefits you may not know about.
What Is It?
A consultation is an appointment with our dentist that is usually the first step in a larger and more comprehensive treatment plan. We can book you in at a time convenient to you and we will request preliminary information so we know what it is you want to come in for. It isn’t the same as a checkup as the consultation is usually a chat about the treatment you are interested in. All you have to do is call us at one of our local practices and our team are able to tell you if you require a consultation for the treatment you are interested in. They can then book you an appointment with the right person, give you information on anything you need to bring with you, as well as book you in at a time that suits you best.
When Does It Happen?
The consultation is the first step before a treatment plan takes place. We can book it in at a time convenient to you, and then following a chat and treatment plan agreement with you, we may begin treatment during that time. As a standard rule though, a consultation happens before a treatment or treatment plan.
What Does It Involve?
A consultation with us begins with a friendly chat about your expectations, needs and ideas about the dental treatments you would like. We want to know exactly what it is you would like to have done, what you expect the result to be, what you feel the problem is and the kind of timescale you might expect along with treatment. We also want to hear any questions you may have so that we can answer them properly. Another important part of a consultation is an examination of your teeth, gums and mouth. We may also do scans and X-rays as well and these diagnostics enable us to see how your oral health is now. It may be that we need to address outstanding medical issues before any other treatment commences.
It may also be that treatments you haven’t mentioned are more suitable for you. For example, you may come in wanting to discuss dental implants but you may have active gum disease which means we can’t use implants immediately. It may also be that the gum disease has advanced and affected your bone density which means your implants may require bone grafts first, once the gum disease is controlled and treated. It could also mean something as simple as you wanting veneers, but teeth whitening could be a quicker and cheaper option for you at this time.
We always want to make sure we have all the information first before we give you detailed advice on the treatments suitable for you. Once we know what you want, and the current condition of your oral health, we can provide you with all suitable options for you, including transparent information on costs, timescales and expected results.
Why Is It Important?
Every single patient is unique and so, having a one to one conversation with you means we can focus on your exact needs and expectations. We can always give a rough idea of the many innovative cosmetic dentistry treatments and restoration treatments we can do, along with prices and timescales via our website and blog. However, we can’t tell you which treatments will work for you until we have seen you and spoken to you. A consultation is important because it enables us to give you detailed treatment plan options based specifically on your needs and on giving you the best possible results.
Do You Need A Consultation Before Every Type Of Treatment?
Some treatment types may be possible when you come in to see us. You may be able to book in for certain treatments during your consultation, but we reserve the right to decline treatment if we find you are not suitable. When you call our friendly team to book a consultation, we will speak to you about what it is for and let you know whether or not the treatment may be possible during the appointment. In all cases we will provide you with all the relevant information for you to make an informed decision and no work will be done until you have agreed to it.
How Is A Consultation Different To A Checkup?
A consultation is different to a checkup because it is specifically for the purpose of checking your suitability for a treatment and to provide you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about your treatment moving forward. A checkup is focused on your ongoing oral health, to check on any work previously done and to speak to you about any changes in your oral health. We may also do fillings and other minor work during a checkup. In some instances, a checkup can serve as a ‘mini’ consultation if you do wish to speak to us about smile improvements you are interested in during that appointment.
