Fillings are a very simple and effective treatment used to treat a tooth that needs to be repaired or restored as a result of tooth decay. They are used to literally ‘fill’ a gap in a tooth left by a cavity.
We recommend fillings when our patients are suffering from a cavity caused by tooth decay. When left untreated they can cause toothache, an increase in sensitivity and difficulty or pain when chewing. They’ll also proceed to get larger and larger which will just lead to further and greater dental problems.
Traditional fillings are made of a metal amalgam made up of copper, tin and silver and are usually silvery looking. More recently, patients have chosen to use a composite material for their fillings which looks much more like a natural tooth.
Most fillings are highly durable and, with good dental care, will last for a long time. Composite fillings can last up to 10 years, while metal amalgam fillings can last for 40 years.
What will it be like when I get my filling fitted?
Fillings can be fitted in just one appointment. We’ll numb the area being treated so you can’t feel anything, and we’ll gently remove any decayed or weakened parts of the tooth that need to be removed. The tooth will then be cleaned and shaped and we’ll apply the filling.

“Dr Amir Tarki is very gentle. I am extremely nervous when I go to the dentist. Dr Amir made me feel comfortable by explaining regularly what he was going to...”do and what I was going to feel. That definitely made a difference to me.I was also very impressed that I did not feel anything when he used the needle to do the anaesthesia! I had a filling, and everything was completely painless from start to finish, including hours after the procedure. If you've had bad experiences in the past at the dentist, I recommend you pay Dr Amir Tarki a visit.”

“I am highly impressed with the expertise and kindness displayed by the amazing team at SmileMaker during my recent appointments.Dr. Amir Tarki was very gentle when I was in pain...”on my first visit. He carried out a thorough examination, did a temporary tooth filling, and discussed the treatment plan. Then, I was under the care of Dr. Raj Chavda on my next visit, who performed an unbelievably painless root canal treatment (I was under the impression that the procedure was going to be uncomfortable to say the least).A great deal of credit also goes to Hayley, the dental nurse who constantly checked if I was okay, kept me calm and worked well in supporting the dentist/specialist during treatment. And to the warm and friendly receptionist, Maxine, who has shown top-notch service and courtesy from my first phone call up to the end of my recent appointment.I am very glad that I chose this practice to look after my dental health, and I will definitely return for regular visits. “I've had a genuine fear of dentists for many years and have avoided them for as long. Then my nightmare happened & my tooth broke. In desperation I even searched...”online to find a way of filling my own tooth! Thankfully, I came to my senses and found Smilemaker in Orpington & I can honestly say it's the best thing I've ever done for my teeth & gums. The warm welcome from Maxine on the front desk put me at ease & she spoke to me until Dr Amir was ready. He was so caring, calming, reassuring & professional that my shaking soon abated. I had a temporary filling & was booked in for a root canal. Unfortunately, I'd left the tooth too long & the decay was so bad, I had to have it removed. However, the extraction was painless. I'm please to say my fear is now behind me and I have since been to their hygienist (highly recommended). If you have a fear of the dentist and know you need to go, I would encourage you to book an appointment with this excellent, skillful team, you & your teeth will be all the better for it.”
“I have just had my second visit following a referral to the new specialist root canal dentist Dr Romolu Greco. Having given me great advice and relieved the pain between...”visits using different toothpaste and a new cleaning spray machine I asked how much I owed. The answer was nothing! I tried to insist on paying for his time and expertise but he insisted . He asked if I would do a review. I willingly agreed and this is it. Outstanding service. Thank you. Gordon This week Amir replaced a broken filling. Careful and attentive thanks. Gordon”
