Fillings are a very simple and effective treatment used to treat a tooth that needs to be repaired or restored as a result of tooth decay. They are used to literally ‘fill’ a gap in a tooth left by a cavity.
We recommend fillings when our patients are suffering from a cavity caused by tooth decay. When left untreated they can cause toothache, an increase in sensitivity and difficulty or pain when chewing. They’ll also proceed to get larger and larger which will just lead to further and greater dental problems.
Traditional fillings are made of a metal amalgam made up of copper, tin and silver and are usually silvery looking. More recently, patients have chosen to use a composite material for their fillings which looks much more like a natural tooth.
Most fillings are highly durable and, with good dental care, will last for a long time. Composite fillings can last up to 10 years, while metal amalgam fillings can last for 40 years.
What will it be like when I get my filling fitted?
Fillings can be fitted in just one appointment. We’ll numb the area being treated so you can’t feel anything, and we’ll gently remove any decayed or weakened parts of the tooth that need to be removed. The tooth will then be cleaned and shaped and we’ll apply the filling.
