Crown lengthening is a treatment we use when there isn’t enough tooth available for a repair.
Crown lengthening treatments are most commonly performed when a crown is needed but there isn’t enough tooth available to secure the restoration in place.
They are also used in some cases to complete another dental restoration such as an implant or bridge. Some patients also decide to get a crown lengthening treatment because they have a ‘gummy’ smile.
We will give you a local anaesthetic so you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. If you’re particularly nervous about the treatment we can also administer IV sedation which will completely relax you.
During the treatment, we’ll gently reduce the tissue of the gum that surrounds the tooth or teeth, before shaving down the bone. This will reveal more of the tooth and make sure more of it is visible above the surface of the gum.

“Had a loose crown which refused to come out and it took several visits before it did so and was recemented firmly in place. Dr Amir Tarki was so careful...”not to cause distress or to damage the crown which would have been a very expensive repacement. I can't thank him enough for his care and patience. A special mention also to Hayley Johnson, the dental hygenist, who also provided me with a thorough dental cleaning and some great advice on how to manage my loose crown as it worked its way out.”
